Why Teeth Stain

There are a number of reasons that teeth stain, from natural aging and the foods we eat, to any trauma our mouths may sustain. Tobacco is one of the most common reasons that teeth become discolored. Other reasons include:

Medications and Diseases

Certain diseases can result in tooth discolorations, as well as certain treatments for diseases like radiation and chemotherapy. Antibiotics such as tetracycline and doxycycline have also been shown to discolor teeth when given to children whose teeth are still developing (before age 8).

Food and Drinks

Certain foods such as berries and apples, along with drinks like tea, coffee, dark colas and red wine can stain your teeth over time.

Age, Genetics and the Environment

As you age and your teeth sustain normal wear and tear, this can cause them to look dingy and discolored. Some people have teeth that are naturally brighter than others, so your genetics undoubtedly play a role in the color of your smile. Excessive fluoride from environmental sources, such as drinking water, or from excessive use (fluoride rinses and supplements) can also cause your teeth to discolor.
