If you get a cracked tooth, can you simply ignore it and leave it? You can, but it is definitely not recommended. You should always have a dentist look at your tooth if it gets cracked. There may not be much that needs to be done for some cracks, but others will need treatment to keep from getting worse.
Either way, it is important that your dentist have a look because he or she is the one that needs to make sure it isn't growing, even if it is the kind that can simply be left alone. What Can Happen to an Unwatched Cracked Tooth? If you have a cracked tooth that goes unwatched, it can easily grow and spread. This crack could go from nearly nothing to massive in a short period of time. Some cracks are nothing more than a cosmetic flaw, but others are very damaging. Occasionally, you may even get a crack that shatters your tooth in half (or even more pieces). It is nearly impossible to tell what happened when a tooth cracked unless you have the ability to see the tooth or have an x-ray done. That is why you want to go in and see your dentist. They can visually inspect the tooth and they can take an x-ray. That way, they have a base point they can compare later x-rays to, if the tooth begins to crack even more. Don't let a crack in any of your teeth get ignored. It is important that you and your dentist are both able to watch the tooth so that it doesn't get so bad that it must be extracted. Protect your teeth by making sure your dentist sees your teeth every six months. They need to know what is going on with your mouth just as much as you do.
