What Happens to Your Teeth Prior to Getting Dental Veneers?
Posted on 5/10/2018 by Brandon Cooley
You've made the decision to finally get veneers. Congratulations! You've taken the first step to obtaining a beautiful new smile that you'll be proud to show off.
Veneers are great at fixing teeth that are worn down, chipped, discolored, and irregularly shaped, but an extensive process is used to attach them to your teeth.
Creating a Treatment Plan
You'll need to be an active participant in your treatment plan before your veneers are put into place. Your dentist will examine your teeth to ensure veneers are an appropriate treatment option for your issue. He may also make impressions of your teeth and bite to get a good idea of how much trimming is needed.
Preparing Your Teeth for Dental Veneers
In order to prepare your teeth for the veneer, your dentist will first trim your existing teeth. This involves removing about 0.5 millimeters of enamel from the surface of the tooth.
This is necessary to make room for the veneer that will be attached to the tooth surface. Depending on exactly how much enamel needs to be removed, your dentist may administer a local anesthetic so that the area is numb.
Once the excess enamel is trimmed away, your dentist will work to prepare the veneer. This involves making an impression or model of the teeth, which are sent out to a dental laboratory.
The actual veneer is constructed in the lab, and the process typically takes a few weeks to complete. Then, the completed veneer will be sent back to your dentist, who will wait for your follow-up appointment to bond them to your teeth.
