If you frequently experience sinus pain and pressure, you may be desperately searching for a cause – and a solution. What you may not know is that your teeth could be the source of your discomfort. The truth is that research has connected teeth and the sinuses.
The Oral Health and Sinus Connection
When it comes to studying the relationship between the teeth and the sinuses, there is one sinus cavity that is often discussed – the maxillary sinus. These sinuses are located just above the teeth, and studies have shown that about 20% of infections here are directly related to oral health problems. These dental issues specifically include the premolars and molars.
In addition to the proximity of the sinus cavity to the teeth, the thickness of the bone there is also problematic. The bone between the roots of the molar and maxillary sinuses are quite thin, so an infection in the teeth or gums can easily spread into the sinuses. This may lead to a sinus infection.
Another way that your teeth might cause your sinuses to hurt is if you are experiencing an abscess. This pocket infection forms due to gum disease or tooth decay. Without proper treatment, the abscesses can grow and pass beyond the mouth and into the bone. Once it destroys the bone tissue, it may move onto the sinus cavity where it can do further damage.
Treatment Options If your teeth are impacting your sinuses, you likely need dental treatment and should give our office a call. We can inspect your mouth to determine the source of the problem and then recommend a treatment option. This may include fillings, root canals, or treatment of an infection depending on the source.
