We would like to help you if you are considering dietary changes that will take into account the nutrients needed for good oral health. What you must consider is that your teeth and jaw need different nutrients than your gums to keep them healthy. In addition, the fruit or vegetable itself can help your oral health by stimulating saliva production or by “brushing” them when you can't get to a toothbrush. To adequately answer the question, you have to know what nutrients you need for good oral health and which nutrients support which are good for the gums and which are good for the teeth and jaw. Once you know that, you have to know which produce produces which nutrients. Overall, good oral health requires Vitamin A, Vitamin C, beta carotene, phosphorous and magnesium. Together, these nutrients maintain the health of your gums and the strength of your jaw and teeth. What Produce Helps What System? To ensure that your teeth will stay firmly in your mouth and not become loose or fall out, you need healthy gums. Your gums protect the root of your tooth and if you have receding gums, gingivitis, or other gum problems you risk the health of the tooth that part of your gum supports. To keep your gums healthy, you need Vitamin C. A Vitamin C deficiency can cause your gums to bleed and lead to other problems as well. Yellow produce is high in Vitamin C which makes it a “go to” choice for healthy gums. They also contain Vitamin A which you need for strong teeth. Green produce, on the other hand, contains calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, which are all essential to maintaining strong teeth and bones, including your jawbone. Both yellow and green produce contain beta carotene, which is needed for the body to manufacture Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and antioxidants which fight free radicals and boost your immune system. We would be happy to discuss this further at your next appointment. |
