What is a Dental Crown?

Tooth crowning involves the placement of a tooth-shaped cap over a tooth to cover it and restore its size, strength, and shape or improve its look.

A crown, when firmly cemented into place, completely encases the whole visible part of a tooth.

A dental crown may be an option if you have had a root canal and need to cover the enamel.

It is also an option if your tooth is weak due to breakage or cracked pieces, in which case, the crown helps hold the parts of the tooth together.

Our Bellevue dentists can determine when it is appropriate to place a crown on your tooth.

Dental Crown Procedure

Placing a crown takes roughly two visits to our office.

Initially, our dentist will prepare the tooth. It is a process where the dentist removes decay in the tooth through the root canal.

The dentist also shaves down the outer surface of the tooth to enable the crown to fit properly.

The next step is getting an impression. Our dentist will require an impression of the tooth so that we can use the precise model to make a customized crown for you.

Since it may take about two weeks or so to get the permanent crown ready, our dentist will install temporary crowns. These crowns help keep the shaved part of the tooth protected.

You may have some sensitivity to cold and heat, so you should try to avoid things that can trigger sensitivity. Also, when wearing the temporary crown, avoid biting hard things or consuming sticky foods because they tend to harm the temporary crown.

After about two weeks, you will be required to check in to our office for the placement of the final crowns. The permanent crowns are more durable than your temporary crown.

Our dentist takes out the temporary pieces and fits the permanent caps.

If there is a need to make adjustments, the dentist does just that before permanently cementing the crowns onto the surface of the tooth.

Porcelain Veneers vs Dental Crowns

While both veneers and crowns can be made out of porcelain, these two are very different restorations. Porcelain veneers are placed on the front surface of a tooth and can cover stained, cracked, or gapped teeth.

Dental crowns, on the other hand, are placed atop your tooth and cover it, many times the molars, to protect and restore your tooth to its original size and shape.

Veneers are often more about cosmetics, while crowns are more about the function and strength of the tooth.

Questions About Your Dental Crown

What Are Dental Crowns Made Out Of?

We fit crowns made of different materials, including porcelain, ceramic, gold alloy, and porcelain-fused-to-metal.

The choice of material depends on the location of the tooth, your preference, the visibility of the material while installed on a tooth, and the recommendation of our dentist.

For crowns placed on back teeth, you need a solid material that can stand the force of chewing.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

Dental crowns can last anywhere from five to 20 years.

You may need to replace your crowns if they fracture from excess force or undergo excess wear. You can also replace them if the opposing teeth wear off excessively or the tooth experiences recurrent decay.

How Do I Care for My Dental Crowns?

You should treat dental crowns just like you do your teeth. Therefore, you should maintain sufficient oral hygiene.

Floss daily and brush twice a day. Additionally, do away with the habit of chewing hard foods or biting on objects like pencils and ice since they can damage the restoration.

Be sure to make regular trips to our dental office for inspections, cleanings, and monitoring of the restoration.
